Respond to two colleagues who selected other forms of termination.

Compare the differences in the method you chose. Would their termination method work with your group type?

Danielle Anderson MondayOct 30 at 5:58pmMain PostExplain one method you would use to terminate a specific group or specific type of group.I think all the methods that are in our book are essential for us to learn about. One I would use would be member termination. Member termination is when members stop attending before the planned ending date (Toseland, 2017). If members are unsatisfied with the group, they have every right not to attend. In your example, explain how the group type you chose can affect the termination process and how.Member termination can be used in any outpatient treatment group as long it isn’t ordered to complete the program. If it is not court-ordered, the client can attend several meetings and say I am not coming anymore. I am sure the facilitator would wonder why the client leaves the group when they can benefit from it, make new friends, and have extra support. A factor that may cause group members to drop out of treatment prematurely can be external factors, such as scheduling conflicts and changes in geographical locations (Yalom, 2005). The facilitator should do a follow-up call on the client and make sure they are okay, offer them a different group, and see if there is anything they can do to help them. References:Toseland, R. Caitlyn A Bullert (She/Her)MondayOct 30 at 6:39pmThere can be various reasons to terminate a group. The facilitator could be changing to a new job, there is not enough support to maintain the group, or the time may have come to an end since it was only set for a certain number of meetings. In this case, a cohort outpatient substance use disorder (SUD) group. Once the group starts there will be no new members added. They will meet once a week for 12 weeks then they graduate from the program. The purpose is so that the group will build cohesion and be able to support each other in recovery after they graduate. In the final session, the group could talk about what they have learned from each other to help their new program of recovery (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Each member may have had different experiences throughout the last 11 weeks. They may have tried outside groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, or Dharma Recovery to help them. They could pass along their experiences that may be of interest to others in the group. They may also discuss positive and negative feedback for the facilitator, which could assist them in further groups.A reason I chose this style of termination is due to attachment. Attachment is considered to be an inborn system that motivates the child to seek
proximity to a familiar caregiver under conditions of threat – a safe haven – and who also serves as a secure base for the child while exploring the world (Gidhagen, Homlquist, & Philips, 2018). It is natural for people to become attached. There is evidence that patients with SUD have more insecure attachment styles than individuals in a non-clinical population (Gidhagen, Homlquist, & Philips, 2018). The group can help change people’s attachment styles. It is notable that only patients with a planned ending changed from insecure to secure (Gidhagen, Homlquist, & Philips, 2018).ReferenceGidhagen, Y., Holmqvist, R., & Philips, B. (2018). Chloe Roberts TuesdayOct 31 at 3:23pmDescribe your state’s laws on hate crimes and which groups are included in the law.            Hate crimes are essentially unlawful acts of bias committed with the intention of inciting further discrimination against members of a protected class. As a result of the State v. Pomianek case in 2015, New Jersey declared bias acts of intimidation unconstitutional (UCLA, 2023, “New Jersey”, para. 1). Since then, many amendments to the statute have been made and additional statutes have been created to allow certain crimes against property to be prosecuted as hate crimes as well. According to New Jersey law, anyone who commits a crime against a person or property may be subject to further punishment if the crime was committed against a person on the basis of their race, color, religious affiliation, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, or ethnicity (Grewal, 2019).Explain whether there are certain groups you feel should be afforded special protection. Explain why or why not.            Members of protected classes should be afforded special protection against hate crimes because bias intent is relevant to the extent of damage a crime causes and the perpetrators likelihood of committing future crimes. In the video, Victor Huang explains: “hate crimes are message-oriented crimes because they have a greater impact than the violence upon a particular individual” (Not in Our Town, 2015, 10:48). Members of a protected class who witness or become aware of a hate crime committed within their community may be triggered by the event. For example, a black person witnessing a violent hate crime against another black person may feel unsafe going out in public spaces afterward. Hate crimes can be traumatic for all members of a particular group, regardless of the extent of their involvement as victims of the crime. Hate crimes can also insight other perpetrators to begin committing hate crimes, causing further endangerment to members of protected classes. Hate crimes must be taken seriously under the law to prevent unlawful acts of violence from occurring in the future. Explain how you as a social worker could help advocate for similar laws elsewhere.            Examining the element of bias is necessary when prosecuting crimes because prevents the occurrence of bias incidents and helps to protects marginalized group members from becoming victims in the future. As a social worker, I can advocate for hate crime laws in other states by examining welfare reform policies for bias and expressing my stance (Lind, 2004). I will support policies that help to empower protected classes and publish evidence-based research that provides policy-makers with the information they need to create socially conscious change. I will also oppose policies that fail to consider bias and further systemic oppression of protected class members. Most importantly, I will remain open to the opinions of others and engage professionally in discussions by offering my experiences as a social worker and facts that support my perceptions. Brittany Rawls TuesdayOct 31 at 6:49pmDescribe your states law on hate crimes and which groups are included in the law. The Title 20 of the State Government Article, Annotated Code of Maryland, enforced by the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights, protects people against hate crimes in their homes; from injury intimidation, or harassment by neighbors; and interference with fair housing rights based on race, national origin, sex, familial status, color, religion, marital status, physical and mental disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Explain whether there are certain groups you feel should be afforded special protection. Explain why or why not. I feel every group should be afforded special protection because equality for everyone is important.  It should not matter what your race, sexual orientation, or even gender identity is everyone should be protected. If your state does have a hate crime law, explain how you as a social worker could help advocate for similar laws elsewhere. One way I could help advocate for similar laws elsewhere is with support groups, so people can speak up for what’s right and for even better laws regarding hate crimes, and similar laws.
