Theories are structured ideas attempting to explain a specific thing. This week’s reading introduces the ideas of phenomena, concepts, propositions, and assumptions. This assignment is designed to help you think about those four aspects and explain the connections between each to help strengthen your understanding of the foundations and working parts of theory.

Define the following four terms in your own words, citing at least one source: phenomena, concept, proposition, and assumptions.

Review your definitions and think of an example from your day-to-day life or your practice experience that includes each of the four terms.

For example, falls in clinical practice is a phenomenon you encounter. The idea that patients with dementia are at greater risk for falls is a related concept. The related proposition is that dementia is related to falling in some way. An underlying assumption is that patients with dementia do not intend to fall.

Another example is the phenomena of death and dying by Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. Dr. Kubler-Ross identified the concept of death and dying and formalized five stages from the phenomena she observed when interviewing patients and family members.

Create a 15- to 20-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with detailed speaker notes in which you:

Present your example from day-to-day life or your practice experience that includes all four terms.

Explain how all four terms in your example work together to form the basis for a testable theory.

Identify a second nursing theory and provide a general overview of the theory.

Explain how that theory is applied in your current clinical practice.

In this assignment, you will be looking at a case study of a real-world situation. You will decide on the outcome goal for the patient and select a theory that aligns to the care plan and facilitates the desired outcomes. You will then create a concept map depicting the relationships between the nursing theory and the care plan. And finally, you will summarize the contents of the concept map

Case Study

Read the following case study:

You are a staff nurse working in an intensive care unit and assigned to care for a 75-year-old Native American man who had coronary artery bypass graft surgery 4 days ago. The patient has a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbated by heavy smoking. His postoperative course has been difficult, and he has suffered several setbacks. Staff members, despite their diligent efforts, have not been able to wean him off the ventilator since the surgery. He has required frequent suctioning throughout the shift, and he is being evaluated for the development of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Assignment

In 1 or 2 sentences, describe the measurable nursing outcome desired related to the improvement of the patient’s condition. Example: Patient will have a respiratory rate of less than 30 breaths per minute.

Identify a nursing theory to align with the plan of care to improve this patient’s outcome.

Create a concept map in which you show the relationship among the concepts of the nursing theory and alignment of nursing practice (including the critical thinking and clinical decision-making processes) for an improved the nursing care plan.

Provide a 700- to 875-word summary explaining the following from the concept map:

Assignment Content

Which of the theories we covered so far best fits the practice setting you work in or that you are interested in working? What about the theory makes it well-suited for your practice setting?

Use the 6 criteria from Ch. 7 of Fundamentals of Nursing Models, Theories, and Practice for choosing the most appropriate theory for a practice.

Select a practice/clinical setting. Some examples could be an emergency room, hospice, community-based long-term care facility, children’s clinic, etc.

Use the following 6 criteria to select a theory appropriate for the setting you chose:

Case Study

Read the following case study:

Sue is an RN who has been practicing for 3 years and typically works in labor and delivery, and she volunteers at a clinic that serves diabetic OB patients. She encounters two patients, one who has developed gestational diabetes and the other who has been diabetic her entire life.

While working on her normal shift in labor and delivery, Sue is in charge of a student nurse who will be graduating in 2 weeks and assigns this nurse to the newly admitted patient with gestational diabetes. The patient started having contractions about 2 hours ago that are now 2–3 minutes apart, lasting approximately 10–15 seconds.
