The student will be provided with a case scenario of a stressful work incident and will be observed in the role of the facilitator conducting a structured debriefing session based on this case scenario. During the debriefing session the facilitator will identify two workers who will require additional support through the organisations employee assistance program (EAP) for referral in accordance with organisation guidelines.

Task 2

Using the same case scenario, the student who will be in the role of workplace manager, will provide a written report for the organisation on how the identified individuals stress and emotional wellbeing will be monitored on going and an outline of the support strategies that will be provided by the EAP to meet the needs of each individual worker.

Case Scenario

It was 8.00am on December 15th 2014, Arvi and Ethan are community service officers who have arrived at the Health and Community Services organisation’s main office on Phillip Sreet next to Martin Place. The organisation has planned a professional development day and has asked the support workers to attend the 10.00am – 14.30pm session.

Arvi and Ethan went down to the local Lindt café across the street to get coffee and arrived back at the office at 8.20am to set up the room and planning for the training day.

At 9.40 two staff members had rung the office to say they the trains had been stopped at Central railway and that they could not get to Martin Place so would start walking down to the Office but would arrive after 10 am.

Another support worker rang Arvi an stated that Police had cordoned off the streets around Martin Place and that she could not access the building, and did they know what this was about and could they get back to her by phone to inform her of what was she should do?

Ethan’s wife ring him and says are you OK? and Ethan replied yes, why? And she tell him what she has heard over the news about hostages at the Lindt café and a suspected terrorist attack.

Ethan and Arvi look for news broadcasting of what is going on outside but nothing is showing on the news except that the police have set up an exclusion zone around the streets and that all the people in buildings in this zone must remain indoors and to not leave the building.

Ethan and Arvi look at each other and try to make sense of what they know and don’t know. Ethan says out loud “we were at the café this morning we could have been hostages”. Arvi’s face goes quite pale and he says he will call some friends and see what he can find out. Ethan’s hand start to get a bit shaky and he feel a bit nauseated.

The building manager has confirmed to Arvi and Ethan that their building is in lock down, it is a suspected terrorist attack with a bomb threat and a number of hostages and they are unable to leave until police provide more information. Arvi and Ethan informed all support workers that the training was not going ahead and that they should use to the time to visit some outreach services outside of the CBD area.

By mid afternoon Arvi and Ethan are able to see live footage of the siege on the internet and see the girl who made their coffee that morning running out of the café and a gunshot fired.

Arvi and Ethan had numerous phones call from friends and family asking what they had seen or heard. This was stressful for them as they really didn’t know any more than what they had seen on the news.

They bunkered down for the night in the basement as this was considered by the building manager to be the safest option in case of a bomb explosion. Arvi and Ethan could see how scared a lot of the other building workers appeared, some were crying lots and some were angry and frustrated at the lack of information provided to them.

The siege continued into the next day and night with only news footage to go on and that some more hostages had escaped was all that Arvi and Ethan were told. It was about 2am when they all head loud rapid gunfire noises, some of the women started screaming and crying and some huddled together for support. By 5am the police informed the building manager that they were allowed to leave the building and go home. Arvi and Ethan were told that two people were shot dead during the siege and one was a person they knew from going to the café every morning.

Julie the human relations manager of the organisation has set up a debriefing session which she will facilitate for the organisation in the board room the next day. Julie has encouraged all people directly or indirectly involved with this critical incident to attend the debriefing. Members of the management Committee and staff who may have been directly or indirectly involved in the critical incident are offered the opportunity to talk about their experience with colleagues as soon as practicable, and according to their wishes.

Julie conducts the structured debrief to management and staff and offers any staff present independent qualified counselling services. Arvi stands up and shouts out, why would they need counselling? they weren’t here, they didn’t go into the café that morning and leave 10 minutes before the terrorist came in. Julie looks at Ethan who stays very quiet and Julie can see his hands shaking and he looks a bit sweaty. Arvi continues his rant and Julie responds by saying that this incident can affect different people in different ways, that many of the people in the session regularly go to the café and also know some of the hostages. Julie re-emphasise that this is an open discussion and that everyone should be allowed to express their thoughts, feelings and emotional needs.

Julie accurately documents the debriefing session and puts in place arrangements for offering independent counselling services by a qualified counselling professional should it be needed in the future.

Arvi tells Julie that he needs time off work to settle his nerves and will discuss annual leave dates with her shortly. Ethan tells Julie that he has not been sleeping well since the incident and would he have some flexibility in in his work start and finish times. Julie suggests that Arvi and Ethan show signs of being traumatised from the incident and should seek this counselling service and that their manager is there to support them as much as possible over the next few months.

The manager of Arvi and Ethan Team is requested by the organisation to outline monitoring activities that management will undertake over the next 3 months to ensure that Arvi and Ethan’s mental health and wellbeing is being monitored and that plans are put in place to manage any support needs that have been expressed and employee assistance program services that may need referral and access.

Over the next few months Arvi has taken a week’s annual leave and has taken at least one personal leave day every week. Other colleagues say that he has been very hostile towards them when they request case management reports and says he will get it done when he is ready.

Ethan has recently lost a lot of weight and appears gaunt and tired; he says he is fine that all is good. He appears anxious at meetings and has been shrugging some of his work responsibilities onto others.
