Hi everyone! My name is Rahat Kabir. I have worked in IT for the past 15 years and currently hold a position with the City of New York as a Computer Specialist. Computer networking has been a big part of my professional life. Basic networking and related troubleshooting are part and parcel of every IT technician’s daily task, and I continue to work on it every day at my current job. However, I have been fortunate to go beyond that and work with some of the Cisco routers and Switches (Cisco 5505 ASA Router, Cisco 1841 Router, and Cisco 1242G Access Point) for a project I did with the Department of Health. I also helped maintain the network for some of the participating clinics for the duration of the project. I am very excited to go even deeper into networking through this course.
A course in networking is crucial for a cybersecurity degree because it helps students understand the basics of how computer networks function. Networks are the foundation of modern computing and communication systems. Cyberattacks often target network vulnerabilities. By studying networking, cybersecurity students learn about various attacks such as distributed denial-of-service attacks, man-in-the-middle attacks, and network intrusion attempts. This knowledge helps them design and implement countermeasures effectively. Also, many cybersecurity tools and solutions operate at the network level. Cybersecurity professionals must be proficient in using these tools for tasks like vulnerability scanning, network segmentation, and traffic analysis. Plus, networking skills boost job opportunities and career growth in cybersecurity, as many roles require expertise in both networking and security.

Hello class! My name is Jacob, I am 23 years old living in California. I received my AA in psychology from a junior college, but decided I wanted to pursue a career in the IT field. Specifically, I am hoping to get a bachelor’s degree in computer science and work in the cyber security environment. This is already my fourth semester as a student at SNHU, but I am still new to networking, programming, and many other IT skills. I have been around networks my whole life, but failed to realize the depth of networks when I was using them. Although I am still new, I feel confident with taking this class because of my familiarity with networks.

I have used multiple kinds of networks in my life, mainly for connecting to the internet, but I am still unaware of some of the specific implications they may hold. Despite that fact, I believe I have a strong grasp on how they work and the purposes they serve. If I am looking to be a cybersecurity professional, I will need knowledge of installing firewalls, installing detection systems, and other safety measures put in place to protect computer networks. In other words, understanding networking regulations will help me prevent potential cyber-attacks. Having a good grasp on IT infrastructure will make my job as a cyber security professional much easier compared to if I had little to no knowledge of how networking works.
