Case Assessment:

Please read the below case assessment of the Walker Family. You are a family social worker providing services to this family. The family became involved with your social work agency when 15-year-old Simone ran away from home and was gone for a week.

The Walker Family

Family Composition:

The Walker Family is a middle-class African American family from Jacksonville, Florida. They live in the suburbs in a single-family home. The family includes the parents, 40-year-old Kim Walker and David Walker and their daughter 15-year-old Simone.

Current Situation:

Kim and David have been married for 16 years. Last year, they separated when Kim found out David was cheating on her with a younger woman at his job. When David moved out of the home into another home in the same neighborhood, Simone’s behavior began to change.

The separation and now final divorce have been hard on the family. The couple who were angry at each other put Simone in the middle of their fighting. Simone loves both of her parents and spent equal time with each parent during the separation. Kim and David have joint custody of Simone.

Simone used to be an A average student but has now dropped down to C’s and D’s and has been charged as a minor in possession of alcohol.

Prior to running away, Simone was truant from school on numerous occasions and rebellious toward her parents, teachers, and track coach. Simone met her boyfriend on SnapChat due to him attending another school in the city. She ran away from home and was gone for a week.

Simone’s behavior was a response to her frustration and inability to communicate her needs and feelings to her parents.

Kim and David realized how their conflicts were affecting their daughter and contributing to her problems at school and at home.
