Course objectives:

This course examines the layered causes and consequences of social turbulence around the world. It explores how peoples interact with each other and the world around them. Additionally, students will study how people react to societal and environmental changes.

Students gain an understanding of social history and some of the main historical factors that helped create the global community and its present structure. This includes exploration of such topics as colonization, globalization, and industrialization. These factors provide the framework for understanding the current global structure and societal demographics. After this foundation is created, the course is broken into three additional units that address ethnic, religious and cultural issues, health and the environment and finally population shift. Students will learn how ethnicity and religion are mobilized, which can create instability and potentially violent conflict. They will explore how disease and the environment are connected and how these issues cause problems within and across societies. Students will also explore how demographics are changing our world, by exploring climate migration and the infrastructural and mental strain that the growing trend toward megacities is creating.

Describe colonization, industrialization, and globalization have created spaces in which social turbulence can arise. As we have discussed, social turbulence is over-determined and there are a number of factors that contribute.
