How Discussion Boards Work In This Class

There are three graded discussion boards in this course, not counting the ungraded “Introduce Yourself!” discussion board found in the Getting Started Module.

Should you use any sources other than the course textbook or the sources provided in the discussion board prompt, you should make sure to cite those posts using any of the appropriate citation methods discussed here. You should also write your post with proper grammar, paragraphs, and complete sentences. Your original post will be graded for its thoroughness in answering the discussion prompt, its use of argumentation, and the clarity of the writing.

You should reply to two of your classmates’ posts. The discussion boards in this course work slightly differently than you may be used to from other online classes, though. In this course, I ask that you structure your reply to your classmates using the following “3Cs and a Q” format. The purpose of this kind of format is to try and get us all beyond the usual temptation to write back with some version of “good post, I agree!” To receive full credit for the discussion boards, you should make sure to format your replies in the following manner.

The following is adapted from Jennifer Stewart-Mitchell’s originalLinks to an external site. 3C and a Q approach. Each of your two replies should feature:

1) Compliment: It is good to start your reply on a positive note. Compliment the original post about something you liked or were impressed by.

2) Comment: Comment on something specific that the person wrote. The comment should be relevant and meaningful (and should go beyond just “I agree”). The comment can even involve disagreeing with something they wrote, though if you do so then please make sure to always be polite and respectful.

3) Connect: Now things get a bit harder. You should connect something in their original post either with something from your own personal experience or with something else we have covered in the class.

4) Question: Finally, finish by asking the original author something specific about something they wrote. It could be something you want to hear more about or something you were left wondering after reading their post.

Following the above instructions, need help with replies to students’ posts below:

Student # 1 “ Delegates and trustees are political figures whose job is to represent the people. They have the ability to be the voice of the people and help them make decisions in government. Delegates and trustees both have a leadership role in the government that is used to help and benefit the public. They have the responsibly to keep themselves informed of the public to help them with major or minor issues within it. Now, delegates and trustees differ in multiple ways. Delegates have the role of doing exactly what the people want. They give the people what they see fit, even if they don’t necessarily         agree, they still give the people what they would prefer. A delegate keeps close with the popular opinion and does not make decisions based off of personal opinions and thoughts. On the other hand, a trustee will make decisions based off of what they personally think is best for the public. A trustee makes important decisions based off of what he or she thinks will benefit the public and based off of what he or she thinks will be the greater good. Sometimes what the trustee thinks can align with what the public view. But if the two don’t align a trustee will take action the way they personally feel. I believe members of congress should act as delegates when representing their constituents. I believe this is the best way for political figures in power to truly do what’s best for the people. Delegates will ultimately do what the public thinks is best of them”.

Student # 2 “The definition in our text for delegate is, “A a delegate, who is bound to vote the way constituents want?” The second definition in our textbook for trustee is, “A trustee, a representative who is directed by their own judgment rather than their constituents’ views.” This definition is though the political representation website and they have said, “The delegate and the trustee conception of political representation place competing and contradictory demands on the behavior of representative” My definition for delegate is the ones that are being voted by the constituents and not by themselves. Now for the Trustees my definition for this one would be the trustees are being voted by their own voters and not the constituents. Delegate and Trustees are both being votes but not by each other or by there own governors. I feel like the example I can give is the president, personally I did not vote but for us its both because we are the trustee that vote for our present but then its also the congress because they are the last ones to get the votes in and t=are the last ones to know who won and who hasn’t. So with this example I would say both but more of delegate then trustee. Honestly I feel like our congress should be more of a trustee because they vote for themselves and not have to go another way and I feel like people would honestly have their own option if they voted themselves and not have someone else that barely knows what is going on. Either way the congress would have to choice if there area going to go Delegate or if they are going to go Trustee. Once there have decide on which is best then we would know ourselves”.
