 BEDSIDE Shift report: Overview of the Intervention

The intervention to promote patient and family engagement fosters a collaborative environment where patients, families, clinicians, and hospital staff collaborate. The intervention is also appropriate for the hospital setting and all partners working to improve the quality and safety of hospital care. Patient and family engagement refers to actions taken by patients, family members, clinicians, hospital staff, and the organizational policies and procedures that support these actions. The bedside shift report is a clinical expression involving patients and families as vital health care team members. 

Furthermore, providing a safe environment includes, but is not limited to, proper handoff. Improper handoff is responsible for a large number of incidents. Therefore, it is vital to identify the risk requiring tighter monitoring before, during, and after patient care. Some difficulties include a high turnover rate, inpatient physicians, patients, and family members eager to complete the surgery or receive care. As a result, decreasing avoidable errors is an integral part of enhancing care quality.

Evidence of nurse bedside shift report (BSR ).

Communication during care transitions, such as nurse shift changes, is critical for ensuring a safe and effective handoff. Allowing the patient and family to participate (McAllen et al., 2018) in the nurse’s bedside shift report allows them to learn what happened during the shift and the next steps in their care. It also allows them to ask questions and provide feedback on the care process.

  After implementing the bedside shift report, hospitals reported increased patient satisfaction and improvements in the nurse-patient relationship (McAllen et al., 2018).  In addition, one study found that the end-of-shift change resulted in a significant decrease in the average number of call lights on (McAllen et al., 2018).  The bedside shift report has increased among the nursing staff and physicians (McAllen et al., 2018).
