Overview of a Nursing Theory and Theorist

Be sure to discuss the basic philosophical and structural components of the theory, the classification of the theory, the purpose and intention of the theory, and whether the theory is based upon other theories or approaches (from other nursing scholars or from other disciplines). Identify what areas of nursing the theory has the most impact, nursing practice, nursing research, nursing education, or nursing administration. Also discuss the development of the theory/theoretical approach based upon the sociopolitical and cultural influences of the time and environment of its development, upon the roles in nursing that the theorist held, and the values and beliefs of the theorist.

This week, please expand upon your initial post by describing a situation from your experiences in nursing in which you would apply your particular nursing theories.

To be clear, you will describe a situation in detail and then apply each of your nursing theory(ies) to that situation separately.

Be sure to pick and example that clearly illustrates the strength of each nursing theory in application to either nursing practice, nursing research, nursing education, or nursing administration.

Describe why the classification of each theory is appropriate for the situation you have described.

Compare and contrast the the usefulness of each of your theories to this particular situation.

exploring the similarities and the differences between theorists

Unit 4 Weekly Discussion

You have started to learn about one another’s theorists/theories and how they apply to nursing practice, nursing administration, nursing research, and nursing education.

This week you will be exploring the similarities and the differences between theorists. Choose one of your theories that you have been discussing with your peers each week. Then choose an alternate theorist/theory that you can compare and contrast approaches against. Theories should have similar aims and/or be in the same classification. For example, you might choose to compare utility of Benner’s Skills Acquisition Theory with either Knowles Adult Learning Theory or perhaps with the Synergy Model. Provide a comprehensive contrast and comparison which includes similarities and differences, as well as opportunitites and threats to implementing into the various areas within nursing, including practice, administration, research and education. Theories may have similar purpose and intent; however one may have more utility in administration and the other may have more utility in practice or education. Be sure that you are using current evidence and literature to support your discussion posting.

You have looked at the limitations and opportunities to utilization of these approaches in nursing practice, administration, research and education.
