Purpose

Master’s-prepared advance practice nurses will have opportunities to lead change in different practice settings. Part of this includes having an understanding of how important information is collected and documented. Most organizations utilize an Electronic Health Record (EHR) for documenting important patient assessment and practice findings. As with any technological programs there are pros and cons. This assignment will be the development of a PowerPoint (PPT) presentation addressing the pros and cons of utilizing the EHR and how potential barriers are addressed to ensure information is safe.

Course Learning Outcomes

Through this assignment, the student will address the following course learning outcomes:

CO 1: Describe selected patient-care technologies to address the needs of a diverse patient population and support safe nursing practice. (POs 1 and 5)

CO 2: Analyze data from all relevant sources, including technologies, to inform the delivery of care. (POs 1 and 5)

CO 3: Examine the use of information systems to document interventions related to achieving nursing-sensitive outcomes including the use of standardized terminologies. (POs 1 and 5)

CO 4: Discuss the principles of data integrity, professional ethics, and legal requirements related to data security, regulatory requirements, confidentiality, and client’s right to privacy. (POs 1, 2, and 4)

Criteria for Content

You are to address your current EHR program used at your organization. If your organization uses paper charts, consider an EHR that you would like to further explore and implement at your organization for this assignment. Part of the assignment will include providing an introduction to your EHR, including name and inception of it being used at your organization. Also, provide a historical background of when this program was first initiated at your organization and why and a little about the program itself. The focus of your PPT presentation is to address the positive factors about this program, the concerns with the chosen program, and what can be done to improve the concerns to ensure the use of the EHR is safe. The reflection of greatest learning will address what you have learned about the EHR along with how to improve the use for best patient outcomes and documentation of services provided. The summary will provide an overall review of the key points obtained during this assignment.

Create a PowerPoint presentation to address the following:

Introduction should include a definition of an EHR. Please include the name of the EHR program at your facility and when it was started at your organization. Please support this section with a scholarly source.

Present three key points about the EHR program in use that fosters best outcomes for both client information and organization outcomes and include scholarly support for this section.

Present overall/unit specific concerns of the EHR and other concerns that maybe identified with the use of all types of EHRs. Make sure to include scholarly support for this section.

Identify how you can address these concerns and ensure the EHR is used in a safe and effective manner. Include scholarly support for this section.

Provide a reflection of greatest learning after completing this assignment and how it can be incorporated to improve the use of the EHR at your organization

Provide a conclusion. Include a summary on the key points of this presentation.

Each slide (excluding title and reference slides) must include detailed speaker notes.

Formal, scholarly writing style with complete sentence and paragraph structure should be used to create the speaker notes.

Scholarly literature support should be integrated within the speaker notes.

Speaker notes assure that all assignment expectations and key points are covered.

Within the speaker notes, the rules of grammar, spelling, word usage, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure are followed and consistent with formal, scholarly writing as noted in the most current edition of the APA Manual.
