It can encompass various aspects of immigration, including who is eligible to enter a country, the conditions under which they are admitted, and the rights and responsibilities of immigrants once they arrive. Addressing immigration policy reform is a complex and multifaceted issue with various social, ethical, and economic reasons to consider.

To start with, there are the social factors reasons for this to be done. Immigration policies affect families through reunification. They impact the ability of families to reunite with their loved ones. Reform can help prevent family separations and promote family unity, which is a fundamental social value. Also, they can easily lead to humanitarian concerns. Addressing immigration policies can be an ethical imperative, as it often involves refugees and asylum seekers fleeing persecution, violence, or other life-threatening circumstances (Natter et al., 2020). A compassionate response is essential for upholding human rights. Additionally, effective immigration policies can promote social cohesion and integration by ensuring that newcomers have opportunities to contribute to and become part of their new communities. It also brings about diversity and cultural enrichment. Immigration brings cultural diversity, which can enrich society in various ways, including in the arts, cuisine, and overall cultural exchange.

In addition, there are ethical reasons which should be closely monitored before making the reforms. This includes upholding the human rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status. Immigration policy reform should aim to respect and protect these rights since it is a fundamental ethical concern. The reforms also require fairness and equity. Ethical considerations demand that immigration policies be fair and equitable, providing equal opportunities for all, irrespective of their country of origin or economic background (Migliarini & Stinson, 2020). Ethical reform involves treating immigrants with dignity and respect, rather than subjecting them to inhumane treatment, discrimination, or exploitation. Finally, there is the rule of law which requires immigration policies to be transparent, ensuring that due process is followed and that individuals are treated justly.

Finally, there are economic factors including labor force and economic growth. Immigration can bolster the labor force, addressing labor shortages and contributing to economic growth. Reform can ensure that economic needs are met by providing pathways for legal employment. There is also innovation and entrepreneurship. Immigrants have a history of contributing to innovation and entrepreneurship in host countries. Reform can attract talent and encourage innovation. Also, the consumer demand should be considered. A diverse population can stimulate consumer demand and economic activity, which can have a positive impact on businesses and the overall economy. Finally, those involved in the reform should weigh the social services and fiscal impact. Immigration reform can address concerns related to the fiscal impact of immigration on social services by designing policies that balance economic contributions with service needs.

Countries like the United States have derived significant societal advantages from immigration, notwithstanding their ongoing struggle to establish comprehensive immigration legislation. Nevertheless, the phenomenon of illegal immigration has had a significant detrimental impact on some states within the United States, resulting in adverse consequences such as the strain on social services and the increased load on public education systems. The presence of security hazards, strained inter-country relationships, and restricted labor rights has been associated with illegal immigration, thereby necessitating the modification of immigration policies. There is a clear need to modify immigration laws. For example, implementing legislation aimed at attracting highly qualified immigrants would provide a net positive impact on any given nation (Oliinyk, 2021). The implementation of measures, such as expanding opportunities for students to pursue higher education inside the nation, would provide a multifaceted social and cultural influence (Bowden et al., 2019). The removal of immigration restrictions enhances a nation’s reputation, therefore substantially reducing the probability of security-related threats, such as acts of terrorism.
The supply of services like judicial and health services is a recurrent ethical motive to address immigration policy. Healthcare is an area where most current immigration rules either expressly give or limit access for newcomers. Some rules go as far as to forbid immigrants from receiving even the most basic forms of medical treatment, such as preventative checkups and urgent care. The fact that undocumented people are less likely to utilize healthcare services when they are offered is persuasive enough to justify relaxing these rules. Some nations have passed laws guaranteeing illegal immigrants access to healthcare, but the complex bureaucracy and red tape involved in actually getting that treatment puts many people off. Policies governing immigration should be crafted in a way that minimizes the likelihood of profiling and prejudice on the part of immigration officers and other government employees.
Immigrants make significant contributions to the U.S. economy. Agriculture, fishing, construction, and the textile sectors all benefit greatly from the labor of immigrant workers. Employers’ need for low-skilled workers is met in part by the inflow of new immigrants. Because of the country’s aging population and low birthrate, the United States desperately needs immigrants who can bolster the country’s workforce and boost the number of people eligible for retirement. In a similar vein, immigrants compete with native-born Americans for better employment, often at greater wages. Their offspring improve upon their parents’ shortcomings by furthering their education after high school. In order to increase the pace of innovation and productivity as a whole, this is crucial. In light of this contribution, regulations like the justification for the ‘Public Charge’ rule need to be examined more closely. The regulation makes it more difficult for legal immigrants to access healthcare programs like Medicaid and SNAP.
