General Instructions for all Discussion Boards:

1.            Complete required reading before creating your post.

2.            Initial post: Each student creates a new thread in the forum as the initial posting of their own that is 250-300 words (use your Word Count tool) and includes at least TWO scholarly references to support the posting. One of the references is the appropriate text and the other a scholarly, peer reviewed journal article. If the professor responds and asks you for clari?cation or a question, you must respond to the professor.

3.            Responding to posts: Each student must respond once during the week. The response must be thoughtful and reference-based. The response must be 100-125 words. Please put thought into your statements. General posts will not count; you must provide additional knowledge and add to the discussion to receive credit for the posting. ONE reference is required for response. It may be one of the original references the poster used.

4.            Students who do not post by the due dates will be considered absent and will earn a grade of 0% for the Discussion post. Discussion board posts that are incomplete or do not meet the requirements may earn a partial grade or zero.

5.            References must be in APA Style (7th edition) and included at the end of both postings – hanging indentation not required.

6.            The reference is not included in the word count. HINT: To avoid losing work and check your word count, write your post in Word or Google doc, do the word count, and when ?nished copy & paste into the Discussion Board.

A.            Imagine you have been hired to be an adjunct clinical instructor for LIU’s BSN program students (whatever your speciality area is). Knowing you are taking on the educational role, complete the discussion board.

B.            Read (or reread) the two assigned articles from last week on nursing education. Use the nursing education class slides too. Cangelosi et al. (2009) did research with clinical experts who were participating in a Clinical Nurse Educator Academy to learn how to be undergraduate clinical instructors. The data were collected by participants completing narratives to three questions. In data analysis three themes emerged: “Buckle Your Seatbelt,” “Embracing the Novice,” and “Mentoring in the Dark.” Additionally, Benner’s Model of Skills Acquisition is clearly evident in this conversation. Considering all this, answer each of these questions. You might note that #2, 3, & 4 are the actual research questions from Cangelosi et al. (2009).

1.            As a novice clinical instructor, brie?y explain which theme you identify with most.

2.            Think about what it is like to move from a role as a clinical “expert” to a “novice” educator role. Describe an incident from your own BSN education OR from observing clinical instructors in your RN job that re?ects your concerns about moving from the clinician to the clinical nurse educator role.

3.                            Think about how you make a difference for patients as an RN. Describe an incident that re?ects your ideas about how you can make a difference for students as they learn new clinical skills.

4.            Think about the role of mentoring in nursing. Describe an incident that re?ects your ideas about what you need from a mentor as you move to a new role as clinical nurse educator.

C.            Respond re?ectively to one Peer noting how you see similarities or differences in their responses compared to your own.
