Emancipatory Knowing

Review the Instructions in the document below. Then click on “Discussion Board #1” to go to discussion. Create a New Thread to begin your Initial Post.

General Instructions for all Discussion Boards:

1.            Complete required reading before creating your post.

2.            Initial post: Each student creates a new thread in the forum as the initial posting of their own that is 250-300 words (use your Word Count tool) plus TWO scholarly references to support the posting. One of the references is the appropriate text and the other a scholarly, peer reviewed journal article. If the professor responds and asks you for clari?cation or a question, you must respond to the professor.

3.            Responding to peer posts: Each student must respond once during the week. The response must be thoughtful and reference-based. The response must be 100-125 words. Please put thought into your statements. General posts will not count; you must provide additional knowledge and add to the discussion to receive credit for the posting. ONE reference is required for response. It may be one of the original references the poster used.

4.            Students who do not post by the due dates will be considered absent and will earn a grade of 0% for the Discussion post. Discussion board posts that are incomplete or do not meet the requirements may earn a partial grade or zero.

5.            References must be in APA Style (7th edition) and included at the end of both postings – hanging indentation not required.

6.            The reference is not included in the word count. HINT: To avoid losing work and check your word count, write your post in Word or Google doc, do the word count, and when ?nished copy & paste into the Discussion Board.

Initial Post: Each student will be assigned a grand theory with its theorist. In the corresponding chapter (below) read about your theorist. Provide a condensed, descriptive analysis of your grand theory, using the criteria from McEwan and Wills (Ch. 6). See example

below. 400-450 words. This includes

1.            Very Brief Background of Theorist

2.            Philosophical underpinnings of the theory

3.            Major assumptions, concepts, and relationships (include description of how the 4 parts of the Nursing Metaparadigm are fully or partially present)

4.            Usefulness (in the past and now)

5.            Testability (skip for Discussion Board)

6.            Parsimony (skip for Discussion Board)

7.            Value in extending nursing science

Peer Response: Read some of the Original Posts of your peers. Choose one you find interesting – but not your own theorist. Considering your own nursing specialty/practice area, briefly describe how the theory your peer presented can be used in your patient population.

Week 11 Discussion

Applying Theory to Nursing Practice

Review the Instructions in the document below. Then click on “Discussion Board #3” to go to discussion. Create a New Thread to begin your Initial Post.

General Instructions for all Discussion Boards:

1.            Complete required reading before creating your post.

2.            Initial post: Each student creates a new thread in the forum as the initial posting of their own that is 250-300 350-400 words (use your Word Count tool) plus TWO scholarly references to support the posting. One of the references is the appropriate text and the other a scholarly, peer reviewed journal article. If the professor responds and asks you for clari?cation or a question, you must respond to the professor.

3.            Responding to posts: Each student must respond once during the week. The response must be thoughtful and reference-based. The response must be 100-125 125- 150 words.

Use your McEwen & Wills text as a source for this post.

Follow the general instructions above and use the follow information:

A.            Nursing research generates new knowledge. It ?nds answers to questions that align with the Nursing Metaparadigm. Theory can provide a framework for research, making it easier for novice researchers to design studies to solve problems.

B.            Outline a research study

?             Choose a problem from your practice area you would like to ?nd a solution for or a healthcare/nursing/client problem you are aware of and interested in ?nding a solution (cannot be the same problem from your Applying Theory to Practice paper)

?             Choose a theory, a framework, or conceptual model that ?ts the problem (may be

the same theory from your Applying Theory to Practice paper)

?             Determine how the theory will guide the study and create a post that:

1.            Describes the problem brie?y (use reference(s) to support)

2.            Describes the theory brie?y (use text to support)

3.            De?nes key terms or concepts (related to problem and theory)

4.            Identi?es the goals or aims of the potential study

5.            Explains how the research will contribute to the body of nursing knowledge

?             Add a Title – include theory and enough detail for readers to understand in your thread post

C.            Respond to one Peer who used a different theory for their research than you did. Re?ect on how their theory could design a study to address your problem too.

Nursing Education and the Master’s Prepared Nurse

Review the Instructions in the document below. Then click on “Discussion Board #4” to go to discussion. Create a New Thread to begin your Initial Post.

General Instructions for all Discussion Boards:

1.            Complete required reading before creating your post.

2.            Initial post: Each student creates a new thread in the forum as the initial posting of their own that is 250-300 words (use your Word Count tool) and includes at least TWO scholarly references to support the posting. One of the references is the appropriate text and the other a scholarly, peer reviewed journal article. 3.            Responding to posts: Each student must respond once during the week. The response must be thoughtful and reference-based.

Follow the general instructions above and use the follow information:

A.            Imagine you have been hired to be an adjunct clinical instructor for LIU’s BSN program students (whatever your speciality area is). Knowing you are taking on the educational role, complete the discussion board.

B.            Read (or reread) the two assigned articles from last week on nursing education. Use the nursing education class slides too. Cangelosi et al. (2009) did research with clinical experts who were participating in a Clinical Nurse Educator Academy to learn how to be undergraduate clinical instructors. The data were collected by participants completing narratives to three questions. In data analysis three themes emerged: “Buckle Your Seatbelt,” “Embracing the Novice,” and “Mentoring in the Dark.” Additionally, Benner’s Model of Skills Acquisition is clearly evident in this conversation. Considering all this, answer each of these questions. You might note that #2, 3, & 4 are the actual research questions from Cangelosi et al. (2009).

1.            As a novice clinical instructor, brie?y explain which theme you identify with most.

2.            Think about what it is like to move from a role as a clinical “expert” to a “novice” educator role. Describe an incident from your own BSN education OR from observing clinical instructors in your RN job that re?ects your concerns about moving from the clinician to the clinical nurse educator role.

3.                            Think about how you make a difference for patients as an RN. Describe an incident that re?ects your ideas about how you can make a difference for students as they learn new clinical skills.

4.            Think about the role of mentoring in nursing. Describe an incident that re?ects your ideas about what you need from a mentor as you move to a new role as clinical nurse educator.

C.            Respond re?ectively to one Peer noting how you see similarities or differences in their responses compared to your own.

Week 6 Online Check Assignment

Critical Reflection on Theoretical Model

Review slides, Chapter, and Schroeder & Smaldone (2015) Food Insecurities article. Provide  a Critical Reflection and answer  these questions (1-2 sentences each with facts from the article)  – click on “Online Check-in #3” then the “Write Submission” link and type into the box.

Example if using Benner’s Skills Acquisition Model the answer might be 1. The theory is very clear that it describes how nurses increase their clinical skills over time and with experience. 2. The theory is very simple, as a foundation to specific theory, each stage builds on the next as nursing skill levels increase with time. 3. The theory is very general and can be used for nurses in any practice area. It describes how nurses improve in one practice area/specialty but also the needs nurses have when they change practice areas. 4. Skill acquistion can be measured empirically through competency assessments but also through observation research. 5. The theory is important because we need to understand what nurses’ needs are as they grow professionally.

How clear is this theory? – can it be understood and is consistent?

How simple is this theory? – elements/parts minimal or complex?

How general is this theory? – the scope and breadth, can we apply it to across many situations or populations or is it specific?

How accessible is this theory? – empiric indicators (referents) – identify the concepts in phenomenon we can perceive (especially abstract – Quality of Life)

How important is this theory? – valued nursing goals in practice, research, and education?

Week 8 Online Check Assignment

Middle Range Theory

Using a grand theory and theorist from last week from the Discussion Board (yours or one of your peers), propose a middle-range theory where you apply it to a population you work with and a practice problem you experience. Be brief and simple.

Grand theory:

Patient/client population & problem

My middle-range theory

Applying it

Example: You are a community-based maternal/child RN who performs home visits. Sometimes your clients have experienced physical or emotional trauma during the birthing process. Your response can simply look like this:

Grand theory: Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Model

Patient/client population and problem: Postpartum women who have experienced physical or emotional trauma during the birthing process

My Middle-range theory: Self-Care Deficit in Postpartum Women Who Experienced Birth Trauma

Applying it: focuses on assessing her agency (ability to care for herself) and self-care needs demands and functioning (self: sleep/rest, nutrition, birthing related injuries: baby care, other children or demands). Develop nursing interventions to address the deficit in between (engage social network if available).

Click on “Online Check-in #4” then the “Write Submission” link and type into the box. Be brief as noted above.

Week 9 Online Check Assignment

Borrowed Theories

Online Check-in # 5 Borrowed Theories. After watching the recorded lecture respond to this prompt (100-125 words):

Describe when you first remember learning about one theory from each: sociological sciences, behavioral sciences, and biomedical sciences

EXAMPLE:

Sociological: I learned about Leininger’s theory in my master’s program which was in Hawaii. It was a big deal because the Transcultural Nursing journal is published through the University of Hawaii.

Behavioral: I learned about Freud in my high school psychology class. I remember our teacher was super weird and was creepily focused on some of Freud’s work.

Biomedical: Germ theory, I don’t know when I first ‘learned’ the theory but I know I understood germs and how they spread since I was a child. I remember doing an experiment in college microbiology where we cultured different objects like door knobs and bathroom sink faucets to see what grew.

After reading the Villarruel et al. (2001) article, respond to this prompt (75-100 words):

Reflect on how you see one of these theories in your everyday nursing practice (or in nursing practice in general). No example. Just write what you know ????

Click on “Online Check-in #5” then the “Write Submission” box and link and type into the box. Be brief as noted above.

Week 13 Online Check Assignment

Nursing Administration & Management Theories

After reading/reviewing slides, briefly reflect (100-125 words) on ONE of the three prompts

Do you work at a Magnet Institution? Use the information in Box 21-5 (also in slides) to share how well you believe your organization meets the expectations and attracts great nurses who want to stay.

Quality management is focused on ‘customer care’ – both internal (staff) and external (pts, fam, etc). Many nurses feel that their rights and concerns have less priority compared to pts/fam. Describe/reflect on a situation where you felt the nurses/staff needs were managed with high quality.

A description of the Patterns of Knowing in relation to leaders & managers is in the slides. Reflect on a nurse leader or manager you work with (or worked in the past) who possessed the 5 patterns. How did this impact your workplace?

NUR620 The Theoretical Basis of Advance

Assignment – Patterns of Knowing in My Nursing Practice Analysis Paper

Should be four pages plus title page and reference page (total 6 pages). No abstract required. Upload the complete paper into Blackboard. Review the directions regarding Safe Assign on Blackboard. Minimum of four (4) references including the textbook, a journal article that provides support/information about the nursing experience/situation (not about patterns of knowing), the electronic version of the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses (with webpage link), and Healthy People 2030 (government report). SEE EXEMPLAR for citation examples.

Reflect on your practice and select a specific experience/situation that you had with a patient/family/colleague and explore the five fundamental patterns of knowing (ethical, personal, aesthetic, empirical, emancipatory) demonstrated with the experience. Try to choose a situation with all five patterns evident. If you are having difficulty identifying all five, email your professor for help. Develop a paper that includes the following:

Introduction (1 paragraph) – Briefly introduce the paper. Introduce your specific practice experience/situation encountered and the patterns of knowing. Cite Chinn & Kramer text and your journal article. End the paragraph with a purpose statement (The purpose of this paper is to…)

Description of the Nursing Experience (1-2 paragraphs) – Describe a specific patient care or team experience with detail – ie. who was present, what was happening, what you were thinking, doing, or saying, etc. Include background information as appropriate to add context. This is not a general experience, focus on the one event/experience.

Applying the Patterns of Knowing to Practice (5 short paragraphs) –   Describe each pattern briefly and cite the text. Explain how each pattern was evident in the experience. If any of the patterns were not evident (usually only emancipatory knowing) state that it was not evident and propose what could have happened in the experience for it to be evident.

Applying the Social Determinants of Health (1 paragraph) – Identify a Social Determinant of Health domain (from Healthy People 2030) that was evident in the experience and one proposed (brief) solution to it. https://health.gov/healthypeople/objectives-and-data/social-determinants-health

Conclusion (1 paragraph) – Summarize the paper without introducing new content. Refer to the purpose statement – what was the purpose of the paper? Conclude that it was done.

Do not copy and paste content – plagiarism will result in a zero grade. Do not use homework help websites or post course materials or example paper on these sites. This will result in course failure. Paraphrase using your own thoughts and words. Avoid quotations in academic writing – express your own interpretation of content you are learning. Use APA resources and exemplar in BB. Make an appointment with the Writing Center to review your paper before submission to avoid APA deductions.

APA – This paper must be presented in an organized and scholarly fashion following APA 7th edition guidelines. Up to seven (7) points can be deducted for the following:

Clarity – 3 points

References – 2 points

APA Format/In-Text citations – 2 points

NUR620 The Theoretical Basis of Advance

Assignment – Progressive Concept Analysis Assignment – In Pairs or Trios

Concept analysis is a structured approach to clarify the definition and meaning of abstract terms (concepts) so writers and readers share a common language. It is done when concepts require clarification or further development to define them for a nursing education, theory development, research, or practice. Use the example in Blackboard. We use Avant and Walker’s eight-step Concept Analysis approach:

Select a concept.

Determine the aims or purposes of analysis

Identify the uses/definitions of the concept in the literature (3 articles per student – 6 per pair or 9 per trio). This can be in nursing or any discipline (ex. psychology, business, law, other healthcare). For each write a 60-80 word summary on the use of the concept in the article and the outcome of using it (NOT a summary of the whole article)

Determine 6-8 defining attributes or characteristics of the concept

Identify 4-6 antecedents (what happens before) and 4-6 consequences (what happens after) the concept occurs

Create a 250-300 word model case that shows how the concept appears in real-life

Create a 250-300 word contrary case that shows how the opposite of the concept appears in real-life

Define at least one empirical referent (how we can measure/identify that the concept exists). Identify others if they exist. (approx 100-125 words, will vary)

Students will work in pairs in the BB Discussion Board to complete this assignment over 5 weeks. Together with the partner, a concept will be chosen from the list below (sign up in BB). If you have another concept idea contact the professor for approval. Do not copy and paste content – plagiarism will result in a zero grade. Paraphrase using your own thoughts and words. Avoid quotations in academic writing. An example of the concept burnout is provided in the Discussion Board.

NUR620 The Theoretical Basis of Advance

Assignment – Applying a Nursing Theory to Practice Problem Paper

Pairs/Trios from the Concept Analysis will form groups of 4, 5 (or 6 if necessary).  See Group Instructions for Theory to Practice Assignment document to guide this work. 10 minimum written pages -12 maximum (groups size will vary) plus title page, references, and appendix. No abstract required. Minimum of ten (10) references which includes 2 journal articles per member on the theory, the textbook, other journal articles as needed, and government/professional organization websites for statistics/rates. See Exemplar in BB.

Groups will choose a clinical practice problem of interest

Next, select a middle range nursing theory that can be applied to address the problem. Choose from this list More details about these theories is in Ch 11 of McEwen & Wills

Health Promotion Model (Pender)

Uncertainty in Illness Theory (Mishel)

Theory of Comfort (Kolcaba)

Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms (Lenz et al.)

Theory of Chronic Sorrow (Eakes et al.)

Transitions Theory (Meleis) or situation specific Transitions Theory

Caregiver Stress (Tsai)*Table 11.3 only Used in example

Model of Skill Acquisition in Nursing (Benner)

Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory (Leininger)

Synergy Model for Patient Care (American Association of Critical Care Nurses)

If the theory is situation specific, the chosen problem must be congruent with it.

There are other middle range theories. If the group wishes to choose a theory that is not on the list, seek approval from the professor first to ensure it is a good fit for the assignment.

Develop a paper that includes the following:

Introduction (10%) 2-3 paragraphs – Briefly introduce the problem that the group has identified in a few sentences. Add statistics to establish the prevalence of the problem – if appropriate (ex. rate of diabetes in teenagers or maternal morbidity/mortality rates for African Americans). Follow with a couple of sentences about the theory the group has chosen to guide the nursing intervention proposals in the paper. Remember, the introduction grabs the reader’s attention but saves the details for later. End the introduction with a purpose statement (The purpose of this paper is to…).

Description of Nursing Theory (10%) 2-3 paragraphs – Describe in detail the nursing middle range theory that the group selected. This description must be accurate and in sufficient depth so that the reader will be able to understand important concepts and how they relate to one another. Copy and paste the model in the Appendix after the References.

Literature Review on Using the Theory in Research/Practice (30%)  (2 paragraphs per student)– Provide an overview of the literature that supports the use of this theory. These journal articles must show how the chosen theory is used in nursing research or practice (clinical setting) not literature reviews or simple descriptions of the theory. The articles do not have to be about your chosen clinical problem. For example, if the clinical problem is pain in elderly dementia patients and the group is using Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort, the chosen articles can be any use of Comfort Theory in practice or research. For this section two (2) recent, peer reviewed journal articles PER group MEMBER meet the assignment criteria. Each student writes 1 concise paragraph on EACH journal article identifying how the theory was applied and the outcome of using it – not a summary of the whole article.

Description of the Problem/Situation (10%) – Describe the problem in one paragraph. Be succinct but provide sufficient detail so the reader understands the problem. Use references to document the problem, including statistics as appropriate. Some of these references would be used in the Introduction.

Applying the Theory to Nursing Practice Case Study (25%) – Present a case study of a client with the chosen problem. Introduce the case in a paragraph with details about the person/population and problem. Make it real! Utilize the theory as a guiding fram
