1Many of us are part of the “School of Social Ecology.” What is social ecology? As always, we’re interested in your perspective, not a researched definition.
2.Our School of Social Ecology website notes that we “share a commitment to scholarship that views human behavior in a larger social and institutional context.” Describe one concept that we’ve covered thus far which you think fits within this perspective.
We offer one definition of social ecology in our mini lesson: “the view that human behavior is heavily influenced by social interdependence with the physical environment” (Pontell, 2020). However, most of you, as students in the School of Social Ecology, came to our course with your own understanding of what social ecology is. Explain that perspective. For those of you in a different department/school, do you consider social ecology important to your field? Put differently, does it make sense for the Sociology or Psych Departments to be part of a different school? Aren’t sociology, psychology, and criminology all “social” sciences? Why separate them into different schools? Regardless of your main department, offer some perspective on the similarities, differences, etc. among the different disciplines (e.g., sociology, psychology, criminology) that we study in our interdisciplinary course. ( My major is Criminology, Law and Society)
2. According to some scholars (I recently discussed this topic with one of our most beloved CLS professors, Dr. Jenness) and writers, due to COVID-19, many of us experienced anomie. As one journalist contended during summer 2020: “There is a word for what Americans are experiencing… There is a word for the division, the economic upheaval, the loss of faith in institutions, the erosion of the rule of law, the collapse of social norms, and the despair so many of us feel. The word is anomie.” What do you make of this? Do you think COVID-19 (as well as other sociopolitical shifts) has led to a “collapse of social norms” (or did at any point during the last few years)? What is an example of a social behavior of yours that has changed (or did at some point) due to the pandemic? Offer a brief commentary on anomie, COVID-19, our contemporary moment, etc.
