Jacques Louis David was tasked by Napoleon to paint the art conveying its political and symbolic message. The painter was himself present at the consecration. Upon returning to his studio he portrayed the congregation with realism, combining accuracy with artistry while complying with the Emperor’s instruction. The initial sketch showed the Emperor in the act of crowning himself, but the final painting shows him crowing the Empress, a gesture that represents nobility, and a less authoritative figure. In the painting David downsized the physical structure of the Cathedral of Notre Dame to give the figures greater impact; on Napoleon side, he included Leitza Bonaparte ( Madame Mere), although she was not present at the coronation ceremony, of which she disapproved. At the request of the Emperor, David portrayed the Pope making a gesture of blessing, originally the Pope hands were on his knees; the Emperor sisters was standing immobile, though they were holding the Empress train at the ceremony. The artistic changes were made to suit the monumental painting and to satisfy the Emperor.
