According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the word forum (in specific to the internet) is defined as “a place on the internet where people can leave messages or discuss particular subjects with other people at the same time”. If that is the case, twitter also falls under that definition and to put twitter in the same box as reddit kind of undermines what reddit feels like. If you have ever used Reddit you know exactly what I’m talking about.
In our lesson this week (the “What is a Network?” portion specifically), the hierarchy section in particular stood out to me. Unless you’re a Reddit admin, there isn’t exactly a hierarchy outside of time invested and even then useful (or entertaining) information is the only true form of currency on reddit. This lesson also states that ‘the definition of a network is “a group or network of interconnected people or things”. I would define a International Network as “A cooperative culmination of human thought across the world under one ‘flag’ or ‘ideal’. I feel as if this definition covers most religions, terrorist organizations, communities, and more specifically Reddit. Reddit can and has been used for anything from catching criminals to learning origami. There have been miracles and terrifying occurrences that have taken place on this website. As a whole, I do believe this platform is one of the best things that has happened to my life or anyone’s. Unlike Twitter, the platform seems almost engineered to solve your problems and the community (9 times out of ten) is there to genuinely help or crack a joke. I’d argue it’s one of the most human things you can visit on the internet besides maybe youtube.
If you’re ever having an issue or there’s a niche community you need because you just got into jiu jitsu, swimming, photography, art, ect. Go to Reddit. They’re not always experts but you’d be surprised how often some individuals actually are. In summary, Reddit is the best global network on planet earth and I’ve never even posted on the website.

2)Networks in an international relations context refers to a group of people who share a goal or ideology and seek to influence action in furtherance of that cause. Networks can be state sponsored or operate outside of the law, with noble or ignoble goals. Probably the easiest way (at least for me) to conceptualize what a network is is to think about major terrorist groups. An example that is extremely timely would be Hamas, and their relationship to Palestine. Operating outside PLO authority, Hamas is a terroristic network in Palestine. While both the PLO and Hamas have similar goals (the liberation and independence of Palestine from Israel, although the PLO has long advocated for a two state solution and Hamas does not recognize Israel at all), the methods, values, and organization set them apart as separate entities, both in legitimacy and in their lawfulness. Honestly, the entire situation is a mess especially following an overwhelming Hamas political victory in the Gaza Strip. While I still consider Hamas a network, their political victories show their aspirations for a Palestinian state.
An international network that has had a positive effect is Global Fishing Watch, a network that recently established with the goal to end illegal fishing activities globally through the use of many different high tech solutions including satellites, ships tracking systems such as AIS and MMSI, and even mariner reports. all of this info can be compiled and analyzed with the help of AI and presented to consumers and states. While the project is still new, I think it holds a lot of promise, especially as I inspect commercial fishing vessels here in Alaska and am a fisherman myself and so sustainability is important to me.
