MIDTERM PROJECT
Choose a treaty from the list that interests you. Write a 3-4 page double-spaced (750-1000 words) analysis of the treaty, using only the treaty itself.
YOUR PAPER SHOULD INCLUDE:
1. Summary: Who are the signatories? What are the primary provisions or themes contained in the treaty? When and where was this treaty signed? What is the primary focus of the treaty?
2. Analysis: What do you find interesting, unexpected, or poignant about this treaty? Are there passages that surprise you? Include direct quotes from your treaty in your analysis!
3. Questions: Come up with at least three historical questions that you’d like to do more research on. These questions will form the basis of your final project for class, so choose wisely! Explain your questions – why do you want to know more about these aspects?
MAKE SURE THAT YOU:
1. Include direct quotations from the treaty itself to illustrate your points, analysis, and questions. When you quote, identify the Article # of the treaty (if available), and put the page number of the treaty at the end of the sentence. You do not need a bibliography.
Example: In Article III, the United States allowed the Chickasaw nation to keep lands “to live and hunt on, within the limits of the United States” (14).
2. Do not include any information or research other than your treaty to write this paper. Don’t bring in secondary sources, encyclopedia entries, ChatGPT’s opinion, etc. Your goal in this paper is to closely analyze the treaty itself, not contextualize it. That will come in the final project! I will remove points for bringing in or relying on external sources.
