SAMSHA (2023), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Advisory, noted there are two popular chemical components, of many, called cannabinoids. These chemicals are found in the cannabis plant. First is cannabidiol (CBD), derived from the hemp plant because of its low THC concentration, no more than 0.3%. CBD does not produce psychoactive or “mind altering “effects, in its pure form.” This is not an illegal substance since hemp is not a controlled substance. CBD is found in oils, gummies, lollipops, topical, beverages, vapes and toothpaste has been used as treatment for insomnia, depression, anxiety, pain and PTSD (Weiner, 2023). However, CBD products, except for Epidiolex, used for seizures, are not FDA approved. There are no federal standards overseeing quality, content, purity or labeling. In addition, SAMSHA (2023), reported on a “2020 evidence based review that found little data to support health benefits associated with over the counter CBD products.” There are also risks associated with use of CBD including liver injury, adverse drug interactions as well as reproductive and developmental effects to name a few.
The other chemical component of the cannabis plant is delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or marijuana. It contains more than 0.3% of THC, alters mental and physical functions and has psychoactive effects. THC is a schedule I controlled substance with high potential for misuse. It is available in several forms such as smoking, vaporization, topical and ingestion. It has been prescribed for clients experiencing nausea, pain, muscle stiffness, muscle spasticity and decreased appetite. My thoughts about CBD oil, although legal, I am skeptical of its use without FDA approval. I know many people that either use it themselves or a family member uses it and they claim to have positive results. I am not judging anyone. Medical marijuana in addition to addictive properties has many short and long-term effects, delusions; distortion of time, hallucinations, psychosis and breathing problems (SAMHSA, 2023).Legalizing marijuana has many arguments both pro and con. If legal, it can increase availability and use of adults and teens since it will be socially acceptable. It was also produce income since it can be taxed. Legalization will regulate marijuana with standards for purity and content. There are two FDA approved medications, dronabinol and nabilone, that can be legally prescribed for nausea and anorexia. They also stem from the chemical components of marijuana (Holman et al., 2019).
