Research Plan Overview – A Phenomenology of the Impact of Immigrants Accent While Receiving Healthcare

 Stage 1

Introduction 

       A. Problem Statement

The problem is a lack of research and awareness about how immigrants accent impacts their communication to understand or to be understood by healthcare providers which puts their life at risk.

Qualitative research of immigrants reported that limited English proficiency delays access to healthcare services and impacts the therapeutic relationship between immigrants and the healthcare providers (Pandey et al., 2021). Healthcare care providers can adjust their communication system to narrow this gap by providing interpreter services (Al Shamsi et al., 2020), and by connecting immigrant clients with a healthcare provider who speaks their language (Ranjan et al., 2020).   

B. Purpose

The purpose of this study is to increase awareness about the impact of immigrant’s accent in the healthcare system and create a person-centered communication strategy.

Can you describe your experience related to your accent while seeking the healthcare system?

What was it like when your healthcare provider can’t understand what you are saying because of your accent?

How does this experience impact your overall health and your view of the healthcare system?

Qualitative

A qualitative study helps immigrants to share their lived experiences related to their accent and how it affects their healthcare access and overall life. Qualitative research focuses on individuals lived experiences and provides immeasurable insights about real world problems (Neubauer et al., 2019). Qualitative study increases awareness of issues related to immigrant’s accent and opens a door for more research.

The Effect of depression on African immigrant Youth migrating to the United States

Introduction

Problem Statement:

             The purpose of this qualitative study is to explain the impact of depression on youth, with a focus on immigrant youth. In general, youth depression is a severe mental health problem that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in activities. (Watson,2020). For an immigrant, coming to a place where he or she does not know will bring excitement or fear. However, if the mental state is not stable or bizarre, it will affect the way they think, causing low self-esteem and sometimes feeling worthless.

It is essential to conduct a study on this topic, which will help to know the mental state of immigrant youth due to the nature of connectedness, which is related to lower levels of poor mental health, particularly depression, and anxiety. It will help in the mental health field due to the rate of depression among the youth.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present the challenges the African American youth face when they migrate from their country to America.

The purpose of this study is to tackle the reason for the gap in research on African immigrant mental health, provide solutions for the closing gap, and how to conduct research for the closing gap on the mental state of youth immigrants.

The method of research for this study will be qualitative.

This research method is appropriate for this study due to the nature of the qualitative research method. The qualitative research method addresses human or social problems, and the research will be conducted in a natural setting. By utilizing intensive interviews or conversations with others who have gone through depression, we will be able better to understand the challenges the African immigrant youth face and be able to close the gap in the research.

Review of Related Literature

This study leans on the philosophical assumption of ontology. Ontology is all about who we are and what we are here for. These ontological questions are determined by the degree or the way to which reality is represented. (Blaisure,2018). So, knowing who we are is essential to put value on ourselves and be relevant wherever we find ourselves. God has a plan for everyone, and feeling depressed because feeling worthless always leads to depression and sometimes ends in suicide, which is a mental health issue.
