Purpose:

This team project is a continuation of Project 1: Design Thinking in Practice. Business opportunities are like air – they are always around, even though you may not realize it. What sets entrepreneurs apart from everyone else is their ability to see the potential that others overlook and then take the bold steps necessary to get the business up and running. In the Opportunity Analysis Project (OAP), your team will identify pathways to contribute to entrepreneurial ecosystems and innovation clusters and apply entrepreneurial mindsets, methods, and abilities to differentiate between an idea and a viable opportunity.

Tasks:

Working in the same teams as Project 1, your team will leverage the many tools that they have learned so far in the course.

Part 1: Individual Logbooks

Team members will complete individual logbooks as a separate assignment to support the team opportunity analysis. (See Project 2: Individual Logbook Assignment for details)

Part 2: Group Logbooks

Team members will work collaboratively to synthesize their individual logbooks to move a solution forward as the most promising opportunity to pursue.

Copy the Group Logbook Template (one per team).

Teams will:

  • Compare and contrast their individual HMW questions from the individual logbooks
  • Create a plan for converging their ideas.
  • Pitch their individual solutions to the group and then;
  • Select and develop one solution for the problem identified in one of the stakeholder POVs from Project 1 and more fully explored in the individual logbooks
  • More fully analyze the opportunity using the Needs, Approach, Competition, Benefits (NACB) method
  • Create a product demo that realistically shows how the product or service will work
  • Create a pitch deck for the opportunity
  • Reflect on whether or not this idea is a true opportunity that can be turned into a scalable enterprise.

Part 3: Group Pitch Presentation

An important part of being an entrepreneur is pitching or making the case for the product, service, or idea you intend to sell. Use the skills, knowledge, tools, and techniques gained in the course to prepare a group pitch for their innovative concept.

Each team will:

  • Each Team will be given five (5) minutes to pitch their project during lab, followed by a question/answer session.
  • The pitch should engage the audience and make a case for the team’s product/service/idea.
  • Pitch deck: a presentation deck used to pitch your idea or company

Deliverables:

Group Collaboration

Collaboration is key to innovation and entrepreneurship, and your team will be expected to show that you have collaborated effectively. Make sure you highlight your role in the group project in your Workbook and actively participate in all group meetings/activities.

Your assignment will be assessed for the following LOs:

To receive full credit as a group, groups must:

  • submit all parts of the assignment on time: 1) logbook and 2) in-class presentation

All group members will receive similar scores for group components, so it’s important to have a work plan and make sure you’re collaborating effectively and efficiently.

Extensions

Extensions are not available for group submissions.

Logbooks: Logbooks that are submitted after the submission date and time will be graded in accordance with the late submission policy.

Presentations: Groups that are unable to present or missing team members will be required to make and share a video presentation with their instructors. Late submission policy applies to the video submission.

Tips:

Focus on learning, not validation. When exploring your solutions, you are not trying to convince your users that you have the best solution. Your job is not to sell the idea to the user. Your job is to discover if you are a) solving the right problem and/or b) the solution you have developed addresses a core user need. It is common to find out that your POV is totally wrong, and therefore, your solution is solving the wrong problem for your users. That’s great! Make changes based on what you learn.

You are not a waiter: It’s also important to remember you are not a waiter taking orders from the user. Not every change they suggest is going to help your team meet their needs. The product interviews should help you develop a deeper understanding of your customer and how they experience the problem. It is common to find out that your POV is totally wrong. That’s great! Make sure the changes you implement are solving the right problem and help you solve that problem in a way that is better or different from current solutions.

Fail well: The goal is to fail as quickly and as cheaply as possible. User feedback will help you decide to pivot, adapt, or kill your idea, so fail well. “A solution might appear to “fail” in the traditional sense if it was intended as a final product and it didn’t correctly do it’s job. However, the value and ultimate success of failing comes with turning an early outcome to learning, which is not the same as correct or incorrect. Fail well by making sense of early outcomes, asking What did I learn and how did I learn it and now what?”.
