1. Several scholars have argued that after 1990, many more governments, including the United States federal government, have treated certain groups of migrants as though they were “rightless,” as though they had no right to be in the United States, no right to press for the right to asylum, nor have any right to settle permanently in the United States. Please discuss three specific examples that might support this argument.

2. In her essay about Asian immigrant “music moms,” Professor Grace Wang described distinctive patterns of “investment” between aspiring Asian immigrant parents and their privileged children. Please describe these patterns, and please also explain why, despite their best efforts, some snobbier people in the United States still see these Asian immigrants as “interlopers.”

3. In her essay about Fremont, California, Professor Willow Lung-Amam described several different ways through which suburban white residents “responded” to the settlement of Asian immigrant and Asian American families in that town near San Jose. Please discuss those responses, and please explain why these new suburban ethnoburbs might become much more common in light of federal immigration rules after 1990.

4. Why was the United States “deporting” and “removing” so many non-citizens from the United States after 1990? Please discuss at least three federal rules that have shaped “the law of removal” after 1990. Please also discuss some of the consequences of these patterns for countries where so many of these American deportees have been sent over the last three decades.

5. In recent years, many scholars have pointed to Syria—including its “epic” drought and then its civil war—to examine how climate change might cause “weak” states to “fail,” and then to trigger massive migratory flows. Please explain why Syria’s drought and civil war have produced so many refugees and displaced persons from that country after 2015.
