SPECIAL PROJECT

Objective: The objective of this project is for students to explore the interconnected variety of musical, dancing and spiritual genres deriving from Africa in the Americas which continue being interconnected with a holistic African culture. Students will also articulate the interrelation between spirituality and Afro-latino cultural production and should be able to distinguish it from Western/European definitions of performative art and cultural movements.

Instructions:

Choose any cultural and/or spiritual aspect/production/practice such as a ritual, festival, performance, music/dancing genre by African descendants in Latin America and/or Afro-Latinos in the U.S. associated with Africa, African culture and/or African religion, then:

  1. Give a description and/or definition of such aspect (e.g. religious practices such as Santería, Palo Mayombe, Candomblé or Gagá; musical/dancing genres like Palo, Bomba, or Rumba, etc). It could be a historical (already happened) or a present-day activity. Check in with the instructor if you have questions.
  2. Discuss its African roots/origins. How does this cultural production of choice maintain a holistic African culture? What makes it African and not European or Indigenous?
  3. Comment on its significance in Latin America today. Why is it important?
  4. Discuss its significance to Afro-Latinos today. What’s its role for African descendants?
  5. Comment on the role of spirituality, if applicable, in such cultural manifestation.
  6. Include why you choose this site/aspect/cultural practice and why did it interest you

Unit IV materials:

  1. Unit IV Presentation on African ontology.
  2. Read Murrell’s (2009) “ Historical Roots of Afro-Caribbean Religions ” and at least two of the readings listed below:
