Thomas lists the qualities of a servant leader per Greenleaf et al. (2002) as “listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment and building community”. (Thomas, 2018, Qualities of a Servant Leader section). Many of these qualities support and improve interprofessional communication in patient care. Healthcare has become increasingly complicated, and a healthcare team must be able to communicate well to meet each patient’s needs. To me, this makes listening the most important quality. Servant leaders hear more than words. Both verbal and non-verbal cues are assessed and reflected upon to fully understand what is being said. (Thomas, 2018). Another important quality is empathy. Having and expressing empathy through understanding and shared feelings as well as identifying and understanding the unique characteristics of the individual team member is important for effective communication. A servant leader who has a team member acting in an uncharacteristic way, will display empathy and caring in their approach to discover what is wrong. By fully listening to the individual, they can potentially meet the immediate need and strengthen the team.
