Read the following prompts, choose two of these, and write an essay for each prompt.

1. Since COVID-19 has been identified as a pandemic, Asian Americans have become targets for
hate crimes once more. They are spit at in public, bullied in school, told to ‘go back to your
country’ even though their birth country was in the U.S., and subject to stabbings and beatings
(i.e., Vincent Chin) at worst. Such hate crimes against AA have been a recurring issue
throughout their history. Briefly reviewing AA immigration history, describe AA racial
stereotypes as they developed from19th century until now, and discuss the socio-historical
context in which each stereotype emerged. Lastly, discuss your opinion on why hate crimes
against Asian Americans recur periodically and suggest a possible solution(s). Your references
must be from course materials.

2. Immigrant children of color experience ethnic identity crises while growing up in the U.S.
Some Asian American children want to deny their ethnicity to be assimilated into the
mainstream culture, and tend to lack self-esteem and hold negative, distorted views of their
own ethnicity. Researchers such as Min Zhou state that Asian American students who proudly
identify themselves with their own ethnicity in America (i.e., as Korean American, or as
Chinese American) do better in school and life. Considering these findings, t is imperative that
educators understand how and why many AA children experience ethnic identity crisis growing
up in America and find out how to help. In your essay, explain and discuss how American
history (e.g., Chinese Exclusion Act, Japanese Internment Camps) has been influencing AA
children to negatively view themselves, using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory (Week 4);
suggest how AA children might be encouraged to develop healthy ethnic identities. Your
references must be from course materials.

3. The model minority theory (MMT) emerged in the 1960s during the Civil Rights movement.
Some state that MMT is a true reflection of AA’s reality while others discredit it as a false
metaphor overlooking AA’s struggles. Explain what MMT is and critically analyze when, how,
and why it began in the U.S. Then, discuss whether or not you personally agree with the theory
as a true reflection of AA’s reality. Your argument should be based on evidence found in the
course readings.
